Day 1 of Weebsmas 2025: Seinen Recommendations

On the first day of Weebsmas 2025, we’ve decided to give out some recommendation lists! With some people on winter break and some people stuck inside due to horrible weather, now is as good a time as any to start up a new tradition of recommendation watch lists, so let’s get started!

Let me preface by saying, this is to my specific tastes and others who have also shared similar opinions about these anime. With that being said, I’ve always been a fan of Seinen the genre because it encompasses many other sub genres. I’m a plot lover so I can always appreciate good storytelling and characterization. In the world of Seinen, mature plots that usually involve more attention to detail emotionally as well as visually is the bread and butter to this genre. So don’t expect too much fluff in these series! Interestingly enough the target audience and demographic for Seinen is men from ages 18-40 years of age, so there is generally more violence, more drama and more thrill. So to keep this lost varied I will try to list only one anime in a subgenre.

Blood+

This is a supernatural drama about a girl with the power to kill vampires with her blood. It goes pretty deep into the interworking of the politics of the world and the complex relationship she has with her servant and combat partner.

Psycho Pass

This is a psychological thriller, in a world where police team up with “criminals” to help solve cases and govern society based on the insanity level of individual people which changes guns from stun to kill.

Samurai 7

This is an action that follows the classic samurai tale of 7 samurai that dedicate their lives to save one town from bandits. Each samurai specializes in a particular skill and that makes their master strategy into something unpredictable.

Uramichi Oniisan

This a slice of life comedy that hits pretty hard for the regular working person. It follows a man who is a TV personality for a kids’ show and although he has a reputation to show on screen he also has a reputation off screen to uphold when all he wants to do is nothing.

86

This is a war survival scifi about a very specific squadron that is made out of kids. There’s an underlining lesson and moral about discrimination, classism and genocide that goes deep.

That concludes this round of recommendations! Happy holidays and to all a good night!
