April Fu-Fu-Fools: Demystifying the Origin of Caramelldansen

Hey all! In the spirit of April Fools we have a lineup of random but hilarious posts. We decided to start with some of the biggest theme songs of weeby history. In this case, it’s CaramellDansen. I imagine some of the younger generations don’t know where the original reference was from so I’ll explain.

A long long time ago when Youtube was just a baby, there was once a song that was coupled with animation that no one truly knew the language or the anime but could only assume was Swedish music and Japanese animation. This low-resolution animation started a dance phenomenon that swept through America (and I guess the world) with a catchy song and a very simple and very dumb dance. To this very day, I still don’t know the characters who are dancing but I will always remember the melody and the choreography. (It’s unfortunate but true.)

The lyrics is one of the biggest mysteries of this phenomenon which many had their own interpretations of. Famously, this video had a misheard lyrics version that became the only way to sing to this video in English.
