Day 5 of Weebsmas: Musical Anime Recommendations

Welcome to another day of Weebsmas! So for those of you who are here for the first time, we have decided to dedicate part of Weebsmas as a recommendation marathon, where we list our favorites in a variety of genres! (As partial prep of our Anime Awards) So we introduce to you the very first Musical Anime Recommendation list!

Those Snow White Notes

I will never not mention Snow White Notes when it comes to musical anime. For someone who knew nothing about the shamisen instrument, Snow White Notes gave me a complete appreciation of it and the music. In this musical anime, the main character Setsu was once an amazing shamisen player but when his grandfather who taught him the art, dies, Setsu loses his ability to play so flawlessly. However, after moving to Tokyo, Setsu slowly starts to relearn the love he once had for the instrument in this touching and thoughtful musical show.

Carol & Tuesday

If you haven’t heard about Carol & Tuesday by now, you’re sincerely missing out. Bring together a rich girl and a poor dreamer and you create beautiful music together. Carol & Tuesday brings two girls from very different walks of life together to create music as they become a musical duo that create amazing music. But of course, this anime also brings in political themes, themes of found family, social unrest, and so much more into this piece. In a world where nothing is perfect and things fall apart, music is an opportunity to bring people all over the world together.

Chance Pop Session

This is another inspiring anime about passions and never being afraid to dream big. Three girls from different walks of life discover that they all have a passion in music. Together they get discovered by a music producer/manager and start working as a group. They get added to a label and naturally have a rival and an idol that they admire. Upon more self-discovery, they realize that they were all adopted and that they share the same mom who is also in the music industry. They struggle to escape the shadow of the other artist while learning how to sing as a group.

Healer Girl

I personally, enjoyed this for the soul purpose of music and choral arrangement. Weirdly enough, this one is also about 3 girls with a passion for music. They use their voice as magical instruments of healing. So their harmonies and songs are made to give certain feelings to the people who hear them. It is also highly competitive field of study but the girls have good mentor and teachers to help them along the way.

Kono Oto Tomare

One of the most delightfully surprising musical anime I’ve ever watched is Kono Oto Tomare. Similar to Snow White Notes, this focuses on a traditional instrument–the koto. This musical anime actually runs under the radar as a typical high-school music club show, but I find it so much more interesting. The leader of the club is a boy named Kurata who doesn’t have many friends and is looking for members lest the club disband. He meets Kudo, a delinquent who becomes interested in the instrument because of his grandfather. The two create this unlikely but beautiful friendship where they both admire and are jealous of the other for having qualities they wish for. Together though, they begin to grow as people–as do all the others who eventually join the club.

So that concludes our recommendation list for now! I hope this fulfills your musical needs for now, if you have any suggestions for our lists, leave a comment!
