Day 8 of Otakutober: Recommended Scifi Anime

Welcome to another day of Otakurtober! Apparently, we have never made a recommended list for Scifi before! No time like the present, we’re going to list some of our favorites here and maybe begin it back next year. We have mentioned a few of these anime all throughout our blog in various other posts so creating a space for them specifically in our intention and we’ll link the OG blogs here as well.

Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song

One of the most underappreciated anime of the 2020s generation of shows. The music score alone was spectacular and it won our award as anime of the year it came out. The story is simple and the characters are loveable, the story was sweet and it felt like you were watching a movie.

I was stunned speechless many times in this anime. The story was beautifully told and is one of the best War anime we have seen in a long time. It brought us to tears as we watched and felt so many emotions in this nearly impossible situation. There was a realness to it that made the characters very relatable but this anime is certainly not for weak of heart. Get wrecked, LOL.

Darling in the Franxx

This is one of Mappa’s biggest works. It was their version of a Mecha so naturally it involved a team of teenagers and many robots. It is a war anime as well, but we focus more on the characters than the war. The underlying message (much like a few other Mappa pieces) of teamwork and love for one another made this story very intriguing. Also one of the better endings haha…. Which says something… (I hope you sense the hesitance in my words.)

Summer Time Rendering

-takes a deep breath- For those who are unfamiliar with east asian island ghost stories, this one echoes hard with these urban legends. Star was familiar with the origin story and had seen it in different media so watching someone else’s take on it was fun for her.

Cowboy Bebop

Became one of the most beloved anime of all time. It had a Netflix adaption that rushed the plot but the original anime, works as a Noir. In a lot of ways, it inspired many different stories and styles from the mid 90s and forward.

Gurren Lagann

Another classic from the early 2000s, and an inspiring story about a boy who finds his passion with a mentor who is the embodiment of confidence, charisma and strength. This anime became a staple of its time and birthed a LOT of cosplays.

Space Dandy

Star couldn’t not mention this anime LOL. It came out in the 2000s and it is the anime semi-adult verison of Danny Bravo. With a main character who is flamboyant, loud, colorful and well…stupid. But that lovable kind of stupid. It’s a comedic look at space travel and the weird situations you can get into.

FLCL

This anime almost needs no introduction it became the face of anime in the 2000s. The best description we have without giving anything away, is it embodies the image of wild, unpredictable, character traits in a scifi-like situation. In a way, it gave anime that insane reputation for crazy and random things in one show for America.

So we were certainly late to the game since the anime came out nearly 20 years after the manga, but wow what a great find. This anime is leaning on the survival side but the premise is inherently Scifi. The backstory of the characters introduced were super intriguing and it’s sad there won’t be more.

Psycho Pass

We’ve never done a full review of Psycho Pass but, Star has seen many of the spin-offs since it is something of a cinematic achievement when it comes to anime. The world of Psycho Pass is what brings the audience in and many directors asked the creators to allow them to make their own story. (Similar to Star Wars.)

Till next time!
