A common misconception is that nerds don’t like to sing. Which is of course false. Some nerds specialize in openings and endings, movie soundtracks, and sheet music. (I use to be one of them.) And it all started at convention karaoke, particularly Kumoricon.
In terms of the WsGs, this is how we all met. Staffing, singing, hiding in the karaoke room. So take it from a musical weeb, we do love our meme-y music.
So, I’m going to list a few meme-y suggestions. (Being that my role is usually the party entertainer, this time I backseated and took on DJ-ing this time.) At first it was hard to think of songs that everyone would know but knowing the generations is always a good place to start.
Being that we were all millennials I figured Disney was a good place to start. Especially the ones that came out in the 90s-2000s.
- Aladdin- whole new world
- Mulan- be a man
- Little mermaid- part of your world
- Beauty and the Beast theme
- Lion King- Can you feel the love tonight
Then there’s the memes.
- Careless whisper- George Michael
- What’s up– for non-blondes
- Pokemon theme
- All-star- smash mouth
- Never gonna give you up- Rick astley
- One week- Barenaked Ladies
Already that’s a pretty good start. Diving into popular hits from the early 2000s to present can also be great choices. Which actually is a lot of r&b, alternative rock, pop.
Boy bands in particular and women in pop.
- N’sync
- Back street boys
- Fallout boy
- Panic at the Disco
- One direction
- Taylor Swift
- Katy Perry
- Miley Cyrus
- Brittany Spears
- Adele
- Paramore
- Beyonce
80s and Older but classic staples with some exceptions
Can’t help falling in love- Elvis Presley
Country roads- John Denver
I’m gonna be (500 miles)- The Proclaimers
I wanna dance with somebody- Whitney Houston
99 luftballons- Nena
Love on top- originally sung by Donna Summers covered by Beyonce
With that being said, you can easily fill two hours with songs by these artists. All in all your memory eventually kicks in and you’ll be able to think of more songs that trigger your friends. (In our case, songs that can be political statements.)
So the moral of this blog, is that even nerds want to sing at karaoke. Even if it is just yelling 😆
