On the 7th day of Weebsmas someone is having an anxiety attack planning a Christmas date in Japan. I’m not sure what it is about this holiday and the stigma behind not having a Christmas Eve date but I’m going to find out!

The most I know about this trend is the anime perspective like Aggretsuko or Ice Guy and his Cool Colleague. That this is some stigma about being alone Christmas Eve. In America, Christmas is a holiday spent with family and friends. Rarely is it about couples and dates. Maybe engagements made in front of family, or kissing under the mistletoe, viewing the lights on a brisk night. I know that sounds pretty romantic but this holiday is like Valentines’ Day in Japan. This is about romantic love.

It is so much of a big deal that the JRPass (Japan’s public rail transportation system) has an article on its site about how the traditions of Christmas are different. One of my favorites, is the KFC fried chicken trend of dressing Colonel Sanders up as Santa and sharing a bucket of party wings with your friends and family. Since Christmas isn’t an official holiday in Japan many people have work the next day so many take the day for what it is.

There are also, cakes that are specific to the holiday of fluffy cream and fresh strawberries on top. Some are decadent with winter elements and cute santas. The deeper I dive into this holiday the more I’m starting to understand that this is a full-on extravagant event in Japan. To exchange gifts to the one you love and spending the night gazing upon the beautiful scenes. It’s a day that Japan takes to make into the romance drama anime/movie/live-action for thousands of couples and friends all across Japan.
