Welcome all to Doki Doki Days! I am very excited for the next few days of posting as we gear up towards Valentine’s Day. Today on the schedule for your romantic anime-related content, we’ll be counting our top five couples from the past year. And since this ISN’T our anime awards, when I say couples, I really do just mean the top five couples that Star and I enjoyed–whether they were canon or not. So without further ado, let’s get counting. Also, because we’re indecisive–the order means practically nothing.
5 ) Emma x Draken (Tokyo Revengers)
Gosh I’m a sucker for this pairing. While we don’t get to see a lot of Emma and Draken on screen, what bits and pieces we do get are so touching. While Draken is never openly affectionate with Emma in the ways you’d expect, he cares for her deeply and intensely. You really have to love a relationship like theirs.
4 ) Loid x Yor (Spy x Family)
Fake marriage perhaps but a real ship that I think everyone who is watching this show is on. Loid and Yor share some really beautiful moments and seeing them skirting around each other in this fake relationship, waiting for it to be real is just delightful.
3 ) Will x Menel (Faraway Paladin)
The first fanon pairing on this list! We were so excited for season two of this show to come out and we loved the return of Will and Menel. Whether they remain friends throughout the story or not, there are things about their relationship that are just straight up BL coded and we’d love to see this couple be canon.
2 ) Eve x Aoi (Birdie Wing)
Our second completely fanon pairing that deserved to be canon. While watching this show, we were very vocal about how we thought that these two should be together. Furthermore, the anime kept hinting at them actually being a thing by using overtly romantic tropes with them. It was insulting when they went the sister route in the final few episodes and while we are happy they ended up diverting that plotline, it meant that these two never actually got together and remained as friends/rivals.
1 ) Ann x Shell (Sugar Apple Fairy Tale)
Perhaps the sweetest on this list, Ann and Shell have been absolutely delightful to watch. The strong-willed sugar sculptor and her fairy make for a fun love story. While they’ve shared kisses and indirectly said how important they are to one another, they haven’t fully gotten together yet. However, with a sweet and dramatic show like this, we all know it’s only a matter of time.
