Day 13 of Otakutober: Trigger Town Part 3: Season of the Weeb

Here we are, at the end of all things. Okay, perhaps that is a little dramatic. We are not here at the end of all things, but we are here at the end of Otakutober. 13 days have gone by both so slow and so fast. From horror otome games, to The Ring inspirations, to Junji Ito art, to 2000s gothic anime, this year we’ve covered a lot of things in the realm of Halloweeb. but for tonight, on Halloweeb night, we though we’d return somewhere we go often: trigger town. So welcome to Trigger Town part 3: season of the Weeb. Trigger warning: these moments are heavily triggering for us and possibly you. They are shocking, horrifying, and perhaps even a bit traumatic.

Hell's Paradise
Tenza Death

Hell’s Paradise- Tenza’s Death

It’s pretty easy to say that Hell’s Paradise had a lot of traumatic moments and a lot of horrifying deaths. But one that stood out, simply for the fact that I threw it completely into the vault and had to be reminded by Star of who this character even was, is Tenza’s death. His body literally gets gored with multiple holes but he continues fighting–barehanded and clearly knowing he’s fighting a losing battle. This man literally saves others by allowing himself to slowly get torn into, unable to speak due to a ravaged throat, and honestly just brutally killed in front of some of our MC’s. It’s honestly so heartbreaking and jaw-dropping (in the worst way) to watch.

Jujutsu Kaisen
Season 2, Episode 5
Riko's Death

Jujutsu Kaisen- Season 2, Episode 3

Jujutsu Kaisen is usually a joy of predictability, but season two had probably the most shocking episode. More than Itadori eating the finger, more than him dying in season one. In season 2, episode three, the end of the episode really packs a punch when Riko–a girl that Gojo and Geto have spent the last few episodes saving, is shot in the head out of nowhere after making a decision for the better. Geto is naturally shocked by her sudden death in front of him, and then her killer, Toji, informs how he also killed Gojo earlier in the episode. THEN IT ENDS. Needless to say, this was a moment of WTF that lived with us for days.

Chainsaw Man
Himeno's Death

Chainsaw Man- Himeno Disappearing

Chainsaw Man is thoroughly fucked up. It is not a show for the lighthearted, and it often features grotesque, shocking, or horrific things. But one of the most tragic and long-lasting in my heart is none other than Himeno’s death. First off, the imagery in this of the devil is honestly terrifying. The art is just so raw and dark right then that it really sets the tone. But the worst part about this scene is that you’re watching a brutal death where you know (and Himeno knows too) that she isn’t making it out victorious. You watch as she gives every part of her body to try to defeat the gun devil but to no avail. She gives everything until there’s literally nothing left of her. A scene like this could’ve been scripted to be poetic, but this is just downright disturbing.

Tokyo Revengers
Mike's death

Tokyo Revengers- Mikey in the Future

I never though Takemichi’s meddling in the past could irritate more than it already had. I knew I could get furious at him, but never thought his decision would make me literally cry and gape. But the ending of Tokyo Revengers season two made me do both. When he goes back to the future, Takemichi finds future Mikey–someone we had all wondered what he was doing in the future. Mikey has changed an incredible amount and has done terrible things that has seemed to make him ruthless. He asks Takemichi to kill him–goes as far as to try to beat Takemichi up and make him do it out of self-defense, but our crybaby hero is a weakling and can’t do it. So what does Mikey do? He shoots himself point blank, on top of Takemichi. And the thing that makes this so triggering is not just that Mikey kills himself, but rather how desperate he seemed to want to die. How much he hated himself was so weirdly clear in that moment that I was just in horrified awe.

Shadows House- Fusion Process

Shadows House
Shadow and living doll fusion

Shadows House is certainly not one of the more common or scary horror anime you might think of, but it really has some grotesque moments. One image from the show that will haunt me to this day, and that Star actually reminded me of is the Fusion Process that Shadows have with their living dolls. In this process, the two become one–with the doll essentially losing all that is them, and that Shadows fusing with and/or around them like a second skin to use the doll’s body as they please. In order to fuse, the dolls and shadows are put in this fusion box where they look like they are essentially being tortured. And like, medieval torture at that. If a doll and shadow fusion fails, it renders the humans essentially dead and zombie-like in the most horrific ways and I think the shadows literally dissipate? I’m not super sure because I threw this very far into the vault. But it’s probably one of the freakiest things in this show.

Well, I hope those moments weren’t too triggering for you. But if they were–well, you kind of knew what you were signing up for. For me? I didn’t super enjoy revisiting them one by one. But I have enjoyed these past 13 Days of Otakutober! It’s been a great one, with fun content, fun IRL Halloween activities we’ve been enjoying, and spooky weeb content galore! Thanks so much for joining us this year in our celebration, and we hope you all have a Happy Halloweeb!

xoxo
