Day 4 of Weebsmas: Sports Anime Recommendations

The bells are ringing, we’re snuggled up under our blankets with hot chocolate and watching anime. Yesterday, Star brought you all kinds of horrible weeby Christmas sweaters, which means today we’re returning to our recommendation lists. While it’s too cold to go outside and play sports right now, we thought today would be a great time to recommend some of our favorite sports anime ! You know, to watch anime characters do what we ourselves can’t.

Stars Align

I will never stop praising this anime. This is about soft tennis. But it’s about so much more than that. Stars Align is your typical sports anime when it comes to teaching you about the game and watching matches, but it also deals on some pretty heavy themes as we follow the struggles of the members. It’s a shame it never ended properly due to the studio canceling it.

Re: Main

Water polo. Who would have thought this would make such a good sports anime? It’s about a kid who used to be a water polo prodigy pretty much, but after an accident loses his memories and skill in the sport. Despite that, he still likes it up again and we follow him as he basically relearns to play this game.

Backflip!!

This one Star and I especially like the sport as it’s not often represented. This is all about men’s floor gymnastics. While the animation isn’t great, we really enjoyed watching the actual routines in this anime. And the characters were certainly fun.

Ippon Again

So we really enjoyed watching this. Not only is this about judo, it’s about a girl’s judo team. This made it so much better—representing girls in a not-so-typical sport. It showcases how badass girls can be. The animation for the matches is also pretty impressive.

Fanfare of Adolescence

Yet again, a sport you don’t typically see in anime. This story follows a horse jockey — well, a group of them really. The animation of the horses is honestly kind of bad. HOWEVER, the story is actually really good. This anime does a great job at showcasing the stakes of the sport. It definitely made us cry at least twice.

Well, that’s our list for a sports watchlist for a wintery day! If you couldn’t tell, we are very big fans of unique sports in anime. Not necessarily your typical tennis, basketball, or soccer. Plus we live for the high stakes drama. We hope you enjoy these anime!
