Welcome to another day of Hotsui Matsuri 2025! This is my, Star, favorite part of Japanese legends. It’s what makes legends into tangible things because some of these items have been located and stored in sacred places all over Japan. In this post, I’ll be talking about my favorite, the Japanese Imperial Regalia

Yata no Kagami (Bronze Mirror of Amaterasu)

In the story of Amatersu, the sun goddess, it’s a long story which you can find here and with more nerdier detailed information here. The mirror was made sacred because it held Amatersu image reflected in a cave.
Yasakani no Magatama ( Jewel Magatama)

A Yasakani is a comma-shaped jewel can be worn as a single bead lying flat or on a string or other beads of similar shape and size. In the story, this sacred bead is one of many on an 8-foot long necklace that the goddess Amaterasu herself imbued her blessing upon.
Kusanagi no Tsurugi (Grass-cutter’s sword)

The sword was said to have slain Orochi an 8 headed, 8 tailed serpent and was gifted to Amaterasu as an apology gift when he wrecked her weaving hall in heaven and her rice fields on Earth only for her to hide away in a cave taking the light of the sun with her.
Although I am only covering 3 items there are 10 sacred items said to be given as a gift from Korea to Japan in the Imperial regalia, so maybe I’ll cover more next time!
