Day 4 of Otakutober: Recommended Horror Anime

Welcome to another day of Otakutober! This is certainly the year of firsts for us. We are finally creating the beginning of our recommendation list for horror! (*Not to be confused by dark fantasy or psychological thrillers the shows listed here are Horror by myanimelist.com standards. ) Our list covers nearly 30 years of anime from the 90s to the 2020s.

Another

We’ve mentioned this Anime many times on our blog. It’s one of the more enjoyable but still gives the same chilly feelings you get when you watch a good horror. The plot was very original but resonated a lot of Japanese urban legends so it felt relatable and real in a funny kind of way. Also has a live-action adaption!

Toilet-Bound Hanako kun

This is one of our favorite candypop horrors! It’s cute and playful, which makes it a-okay for kiddos. Overall, it’s a fun watch filled with color and the ghosts call back to urban legends in Japanese folklore. But I must warn you it isn’t finished, there’s a first season and shorts but there’s more in manga form.

Blood+

A forgotten classic from the 2000s. There have been live action adaptions over the years and it’s honestly a fun watch. Slightly more plot heavy and political with some truly gorgeous moments. Consider this a new age Vampire story.

Higurashi

One of the cult classics continuing from the 2000s, that require a lot of commitment to fully watch and understand the series. It’s a pretty binge-worthy horror in the hack n slash kind of way. It’s one of the more famous feat of cute girls doing horrific things. Also has a live-action adaption.

Promised Neverland

On the topic of kids, this one leans on survival. I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s for kids but a middle-grade level seems fine. It’s certainly a step into the horror genre that isn’t too hard or intense for someone who doesn’t want something too bloody.

Attack on Titan

The walking dead of anime that leans more towards war but is known as one of the most popular of it’s decade. In the height of cosplay and convention culture this show excelled drawing in a whole be era of weebs. Those who couldn’t get enough went to manga and just recently has the anime completed.

Tokyo Ghoul

A really interesting depiction of what a ghoul is and honestly one of the best. This series was also pretty popular for it’s time and in a lot of ways set the bar for horrors from that point forward. It certainly made death look pretty.

Hellsing

There are some die-hards who love this story. It wouldn’t feel right not adding it to the list. It’s got the same arthouse indie feel like Cowboy Bebop since it was released around the same time. If you are a vampire traditionalist this is the story for you. You can find the original and the remake on Crunchyroll.

Mononoke

Strangely captivating, underappreciated series. Each episode is like a mix of those reality ghost hunting shows with cinematic directoring. The art style is unique, made to to look like it’s been drawn on rice paper. It’s colorful and soft with a WHOLE lot of traditional, historic, japanese art. This is also a great beginner’s step to anime horror.

Hell Girl

Is a cult classic, popular among women at the time. It’s also an easy-going horror about being dragged to hell. But due to who has the rights it’s been harder to watch over the years. They remade the series (partially) which made it easier to watch for streaming services and you can find it on Crunchyroll.

Till next time!

xoxo
