On the third day of Weebsmas, Luna gave to me — winter sports in anime.

Yes I am aware that had absolutely no rhyming game and that, in my opinion, is perfectly alright. Anyway, welcome back to day three of 12 Days of Weebsmas. I’m going to be upfront right now and let you know that today’s Weebsmas installment is going to be kept short and sweet. I could BS you and say that it’s because I don’t have time to write a lengthy post, but in reality, it’s because the content is–well, both there and not there. Today, we’re going to be talking about winter sports in anime.

Now, when I first imagined this post, I imagined a post in which I could highlight winter sports anime. In this ideal post, I’d be looking at all these great unique sports anime and leaving you a watch list. Except–there’s actually not that many winter sports anime. Yes, believe it or not, in an era where cycling and even golf are sports anime that exist–when it comes to winter sports, the pickings are slim. There is of course, the ever-popular Yuri on Ice! which I’m sure you learned all about in Star’s post the other day. But aside from that, there was only two other anime I could think of that featured winter sports. The first was Skate Leading Stars — which, if you didn’t get from the title–is another anime about ice skating. So that’s now two anime about ice skating–and mostly men ice skating at that.

The other anime I could think of was actually an anime Star and I began to watch only to drop quickly. That anime was PuraOre! Pride of Orange. This anime had a really cool premise at first: an all-girls ice hockey team. The problem was that the overall anime fell pretty flat in my opinion. I did hear that the second half of the anime made it better, but I just couldn’t find it in myself to go back and watch it. The beginning was dull and there was barely any hockey in the portion I remember watching. It just, it didn’t do it justice in my opinion (but again, I didn’t finish it so take what I say with a grain of salt).

After thinking of these three anime I was kind of stuck. Surely in a world where there’s a surfing anime there had to be an anime about snowboarding…right? Nope. At least I couldn’t find one. While snowboarding is actually referenced a decent amount in anime itself and may even feature in singular episodes, there’s no dedicated snowboard anime. I found that so bizarre to be real. We now have a skateboarding anime–a skateboarding anime where one of the characters used to be a snowboarder, but no snowboarding anime? So weird! So then I thought: skiing? Nope. Again, while skiing is featured within anime, there’s no such thing as a skiing anime.
Which just made me start thinking: why is it that the few winter sports anime we have, are rather tame? Not to say that rudely or anything, or put down the sports at all because ice skating and ice hockey are IMPRESSIVE, but why does anime seem to stray away from the extreme winter sports that would likely make pretty adrenaline-filled content? It doesn’t make any sense to me. I just wish that there was one–just one. Alas, there is none. Maybe one day there will be one, but for now there’s nothing. Which makes me so mad. But hey, at least my irritation makes some good winter content for Weebsmas. Anyway, that’s all for today. We’ll see you tomorrow for the next installment of 12 Days of Weebsmas!
xoxo
