Hey! Welcome to the 11th day of Otakutober 2023! When we were coming up with the list of Otakutober posts I found myself asking why I hadn’t mentioned one of Japan’s most famous ghosts yet. So without further ado, here she is, the much the legend!

The story of the ring actually starts in Himeji castle. For hundreds of years, the castle was occupied by powerful shoguns and samurai who held a specific air above the lower class aka the servants. Over the years there has been countless stories all depicting the same girl crawling out of the well.

Some stories mention the beautiful girl breaking plates and getting scolded by the Shogun. Throwing the plates in the well to hide them or the Shogun throwing her and the plates into the well to hide her body. There was also stories where she was raped or molested and fought back getting herself killed. Other stories mentioned that she was a spy for another Shogun and was meant to poison him and she was hung and beaten by the well when caught.
The story I heard was about a beautiful servant girl who got in trouble for miscounting the amount of plates of food. In order to not get in trouble from the head kitchen staff on her way back she made the now enjoy dishes disappear by throwing them into the well. Only to accidentally fall in with the plates. Thus when you are near the castle around sundown you can hear her counting the plates.

The urban legend part of the story is anything technological. So the tape, the phone call, and even the removal of the plates. Getting the story down to its bare minimum of just the girl, soaked and dirty climbing out of the well in a white nightgown or thin kimono.
I hope you enjoyed this little tid bit scary storytime.
