We’ve covered a lot of different creatures in anime over the past few years during Halloweeb. We’ve done demons, vampires, witches, and more–you know, all the more typical creatures that are associated with spooky things. This year though, I wanted to focus on snake-like characters. This is because I’ve recently picked up Kuroshitsuji again, which now has one of the best serpentine-characters out there (in my opinion), plus I rather like snake-inspired creatures overall. They are a nice change from the typical kitsune or devil. Without further ado, here are five of my favorite snake-based anime characters.

Mizuki (Kamisama Kiss)

He’s a snaaaaaake! Okay no, so Mizuki is like the least cold-hearted snake on this list however he is the most traditional snek snake. Meaning that his actions certainly categorize him as a social snake for his actions towards homegirl in Kamisama Kiss. He makes a lot of assumptions about home girl and his feelings, sort of kidnaps her, but despite that he’s an overall decent cookie. It’s not like he’s being antagonistic on purpose.
Obanai Iguro (Demon Slayer)

Our resident snake pillar who seems cold at first. Obanai was one of the only characters in Demon Slayer to catch my eye. His design alone is visually interesting and his personality completely cutthroat. However, his backstory, his appearance under the mask, and his love for Mitsuri make him more appealing. It’s like when he first appears, he’s the proto-typical snake-like character but then the more you get to know about him, the more he becomes his own fully formed and complex person. Honestly one of my top three Demon Slayer characters.
Ayame Sohma (Fruits Basket)

A classic character who is not spooky by any means whatsoever. Ayame Sohma is the brightest, most flamboyant snake character you could probably ever meet. One of the elder Sohma’s, Ayame doesn’t seem exactly ‘cold’ like most other serpentine characters. What’s interesting though, is that he was cold at one point–but he was cold to his own brother growing up more than he was to others. As he aged, he realized he wanted to become closer with Yuki instead–and we now see him as the overly affectionate older brother. Who just so happens to turn into a snake occasionally.
Snake (Kuroshitsuji)

So, Snake from Kuroshitsuji is actually the reason I wanted to write this post. Recently, I got back into reading it and I honestly just am such a fan of Snake as a character. He doesn’t get a ton of screentime, but for some reason he just wins–maybe because he’s such a direct contrast to other snake anime characters. He’s powerful yes–but once he leaves the circus to work for the Phantomhive estate, he’s so shy and unsure, but ridiculously sincere in all that he does. It’s really cute.
Orochimaru (Naruto)

There couldn’t be a post about snake characters without mentioning the one that literally EVERYONE knows. Orichamaru, resident of my nightmares, the snake man who took YouTube by storm in the mid 2000s–the OG cold-hearted snake (who wasn’t nearly as cold hearted as you wanted him to be and had a creepy obsession with minors). Orochimaru, while memed on heavily, was certainly a powerful character. Probably the most powerful on this entire list. He is THE snake man.
Do you have any more snake inspired characters to add to this list? I’m super curious how many more are out there because I feel like I’m really into these snake characters (minus Orochimaru). Anyway, stay tuned for the next day of 13 Days of Otakutober!
Stay weebtastic,

Other than Orochimaru, I adore every single snek boy you have on this list 😍
