Day 8 of Otakutober 2025: Recommended Psychological Thrillers

It’s that time of year again–or rather that time of Otakutober–where we get to recommend some of our favorite things to watch for spooky season. But today we’re going beyond just horror or scary anime. Today, we’re going to be recommending some of our favorite psychological thriller anime that are creepy, gothic, exciting, and some that are just downright disturbing.

Psycho Pass

In a future where guns measure your sanity, police partner with the insane to solve crimes and catch serial killers.

Summer-time Rendering

Following a young man visiting home on a small, remote island. He uncovers a sinister plot that is slowly killing and replacing his neighbors and family.

Mononoke

Follow a mysterious medicine man in search of exorcising Mononoke and other malevolent spirits.

The Summer Hikaru Died

This is some fucked up shit that requires some actual thought to the symbolism of what is happening in it.

Moriarty the Patriot

Not scary at all, but it’s certainly a mental game of cat and mouse in a gothic setting. Based on Moriarty and Holmes, it is one to watch for sure.

Death Note

Come on, there’s no reason to not have this classic psychological thriller on our list. A true masterpiece.

And that’s our list of psychological thriller anime for this year! We have a good variety of all different kinds, but they are all good in their own ways. Do you have a favorite psychological thriller? What do you think of these? Let us know in the comments! And stay spooky for tomorrow’s installment of 13 Days of Otakutober.
