Day 3 of Otakutober: Mostly Ghostly! Ghost Characters in Anime

Hello and welcome back to 13 Days of Otakutober! I hope you all have been enjoying our haunting content (and are prepared for so much more). Today we’re coming at you with a list of some of the mostly ghostly characters we can think of. Here are some of our favorite phantom-like characters who are surprisingly harmless despite their rather haunting nature. Whether they linger because they’re tethered to a place or because they have an unfulfilled list–here’s who made our list!

Hanako-kun (Toilet Bound Hanako)

Based upon the Hanako-san legend, Hanako-kun haunts the school alongside a plethora of other spirits. But this Hanako has a lot more backstory than meets the eye. Where apparently he seems devious, he’s really just quite playful.

Yukine (Noragami)

Yukine
Noragami
shinki

While yes, technically called a Shinki in the series, Yukine is (as all Shinki are) a ghost at his essence. Deceased from the human realm, Yato saved his soul from wandering by making him his shikigami, and while Yukine has a bit of an attitude problem at first, he’s really a good boy deep down with a rather dark past.

Sai (Hikaru no Go)

Talk about a throwback anime. Sai is the pivotal character of Hikaru no Go. Similar to Yami Yugi from Atem, Sai becomes a part (or perhaps haunts) Hikaru and urges him to play Go so that Sai can one day perform the perfect move as he so desired in his life. Sai helps Hikaru in playing the game until Hikaru begins developing his own passion and talent for it.

Mina Flueret (Drugstore in Another World)

Mina is, at her ghostly heart, absolutely adorable. She is a little bit of a ditzy ghost but has a very mean and sassy side to hear. She haunts the house that the main character lives and runs his drugstore in, therefore becoming an immediate employee of said store.

Menma (Anohana)

Perhaps one of the most famous (and harmless) anime ghosts, is none other Menma. Having died young, she comes back as a spirit to help her friends come to terms with her death — and by doing so she too comes to peace with her own death and desires only to be with them once again. Menma is a warm ball of sunshine and innocence. Truly a lovely person and infinitely kind and caring, and selfless.

Asahi (Phantom of the Idol)

One of the more recent ghosts in anime, Asahi is truly amazing. An idol who died young, all she wants to do is continue performing just as she loves to do. For her, being an idol was her dream and her fans meant so much to her. That’s why she haunts the main character, living inside of his head as she helps train him to be a better idol and fall in love with it just like she had.

See you tomorrow for day 4!

xoxo
