Weebsmas Day 8 – Tokyo Revengers Christmas Showdown Arc

On the eighth day of Weebsmas, Luna gave to me~ Tokyo Revengers Christmas Showdown Arc review.

It still doesn’t rhyme but hey, I’ve officially given up on rhyming for these intros. Now, getting into the meat of this post–I have been sitting on this review for a very VERY long time. Why? Because it was so aptly named that I had to save this review for the Weebsmas season. The season that I’m talking about is Tokyo Revengers season two — aka Tokyo Revengers CHRISTMAS showdown arc.

Tokyo Revengers season 2
Kazutora Takemichi

Now, Tokyo Revengers is a love hate relationship for Star and I (much like Christmas in general). But obviously we were going to continue watching as we are suckers for gang stories, and Mikey and Draken make all of Takemichi’s crying worth it. Season two in particular was both better and not as good as the first season. See, I remember overall enjoying the season but I don’t actually remember most of it. I really had to go back and look up a summary for all of it to come back to me. Now, first off is that I was pissed at Takemichi this ENTIRE arc–which isn’t really surprising because he always irritates me. But particularly what happened in the future because of him made me mad. Because in the future he’s pretty much the cause of everyone (including Chifuyu’s) deaths. So yeah he went back in time and made the future worse and that’s how the season started. The only good thing about the future was that we got to see Kazutora being–well, the most reasonable character in the entire show (and one of the most attractive characters in the future). The bad part? They literally show him at every turn. I cannot count how many times they made sure to show future Kazutora for absolutely no reason. Actually, my bad, there was a reason. It’s because Takemichi kept remembering him. Which, Takemichi does a lot of remembering in the season. Too much. I think it’s just to get screentime for characters like future Kazutora, and Baji. Still, it’s gratuitous.

Anyway, the actual reason this is called the Christmas Showdown Arc is because this is a family season–just kidding. No it’s called the Christmas Showdown Arc because the big battle happens at–you guessed it–Christmas. The climax of the show takes place in a church, in winter, on Christmas Eve. And it is a family story because we meet the character Hakkai who ends up a pivotal character in this arc–as does his sister and older brother. In fact, their family conflict is what leads this arc. Afrer all, Hakkai becomees a black dragon (aka rival to Toman) and then plans to kill his own brother — which is what will cause the massacre in the future (or so we think). So what is Takemichi’s plan? Stop Hakkai from killing his brother. Let alone the abuse storyline towards their sister. Let alone the fact that Hakkai’s brother has no redeeming qualities. Because Hakkai is soft and can’t be allowed to kill. Which of course leads into Takemichi getting his ass beat badly for a significant amount of time. This also leads to Chifuyu getting pretty hurt which we did NOT appreciate. Anyway, so the name is based after a “friendly” not friendly get together for the Hakkai family values.

Tokyo Revengers season 2
Baji x Chifuyu

There were some highlights (and questionable things) that came from this season. Number one question: HOW many times do they have to show Baji? Honestly, 10/10 didn’t appreciate the reminder that one of the best characters wasn’t around anymore. One of the highlights though? Seeing Draken and Mikey totally WRECK a hoard of rival gang members. Okay but we don’t actually SEE it happen–we just see the great aftermath. Of Draken standing around a shit ton of incapacitated gang members. Downside to this scene? It’s when they go to save Takemichi’s dumb ass.

Tokyo Revengers season 2
Mikey

The only other real thing that is important in this entire season is that we figure out that Kisaki–the eye glasses-wearing asshole–is most likely also a time jumper. Yes, I know that’s some BS. But it’s also true. He’s always ahead of Takemichi in the future–because he knows how to fuck over Takemichi at every turn. Side note–Kisaki is obsessed with Mikey (get in line buddy). Because he’s obssessed he clearly wants to fuck with Mikey’s past (and make him lose everyone he is close to). Which is how we end up with the NEW future for Mikey. SPOILER ALERT: He’s very depressed, ends up being the reason the massacre happens, wants to die, and then kills himself in front of future Takemichi. Like GOD DAMN IT TAKEMICHI. You had one job and you keep making it worse. And let me tell you–that Mikey scene was traumatic with a capital T. It’s absolutely going in next year’s Trigger Town. So yeah…that’s what we got from the Christmas Showdown Arc.

Tokyo Revengers season 2
Hakkai

I know from this post it sounds like I really didn’t like the Christmas showdown arc, but honestly–I enjoyed it. Star and I always enjoy Tokyo Revengers no matter how dumb it is. Because we get characters like Mikey. And Draken. And Chifuyu. And adult Kazutora for the millionth time. And a reminder that Baji once existed. Is the story of it always great? No. Is it executed well? NO. Is Takemichi likeable? Absolutely not. But the show is great, and the Christmas showdown arc was a nice story at the end of the day. And we’re definitely watching season three as we speak. Now, would I recommend watching the Tokyo Revengers Christmas Showdown arc for the holidays? Not exactly…but y’know…it is a family Christmas story. So you do you.

Stay weebtastic,

xoxo

Luna
