Welcome to 12 Days of Weebsmas — Day 1! I’m really excited to be writing posts for Weebsmas. It feels like it’s been a long time since we’ve had the time to write anything on this blog, but I really missed it. So to kick off 12 Days of Weebsmas, I thought I’d write about something I haven’t written about in a while: cosplay. Specifically, anime that would be great to cosplay in the winter weather. Because I think any cosplayers knows how difficult it can be to stay warm for winter conventions. And also how hot it can get in the summer depending on your cosplay. So here’s my shortlist of shows that feature winter-appropriate cosplays that will keep you bundled up warm.
Sirius the Jaeger
One of my favorite shows to watch in the winter is also one of the best anime to cosplay in the winter–if you choose your character correctly. I say that because the vampires in this show dress a little skimpy, which I guess makes sense because they are cold blooded creatures. So if you were to dress as one of them, you’re probably going to be cold. If you dress as Yuliy, the main character, you will be very warm as he sports a long sleeve shirt and a very warm winter coat. The other jaegars should be pretty warm too–with the exception of the muscled man who wears a jacket with no sleeves (to show off his muscles).
Vanitas no Carte
Vanitas no Carte, taking place in an England-adjacent world, means that the characters are in a relatively cooler environment and therefore dress more warmly. Many of the characters sport long coats that are warm, and even the ladies wear long skirts with layers (or pants). You could even choose to cosplay from the second season which takes place entirely in the snow, meaning extra warmth in the form of scarves and gloves for everyone. Honestly, even I’ve done Vanitas simply for the warm layers.
Yuru Camp
Okay but for real, if you want to bundle up really warm and still cosplay, you should totally think about cosplaying from Yuru Camp. Being an anime that is legitimately about camping–camping in the outdoors, the girls are well-equipped for cold weather. Bundled up, this is one of the absolute best winter cosplays and you can even do some really cool photoshoots outdoors (and stay SO warm).
Yuri on Ice!
Speaking of cold weather cosplays…there’s another cosplay that takes place somewhere particularly cold. It’s not perhaps outside but it is on cold, cold ice rinks. Okay and admittedly, some of the outfits will still be really cold, but there’s no better time than winter to cosplay from Yuri on Ice!. You can dress up in beautiful ice skating outfits–some that will keep you warm (some that won’t). But one way or another, they’ll be really pretty photoshoots.
Erased
Another anime that takes place in the snow is none other than the murder mystery Erased. However, the only hold up with possibly cosplaying this anime is that in order to take advantage of the warm coats, earmuffs, scarves, and mittens–you 100% need to be a child. Or willing to cosplay a child. Because all of the characters in this are children. So like, unless you’re willing to cosplay a child…
Well, these are just some of the cosplays you can do to keep warm in chilly weather. And honestly, if you ever have to cosplay in winter and don’t want to do something that is naturally warm? Be creative and make some adjustments. Don’t go outside being Nami — create an outfit that’s adapted for winter that’s still ‘Nami’. Winter-appropriate cosplay can be one of the places your creativity as a cosplayer can truly shine.
