Day 2 of Niji Nights: Top 5 GL Anime from 2015s to 2020s

Hey all! Welcome to the next day of Niji Nights! I’ve been very passionate about GLs lately so I’m very excited to write this post! I have a lot of hope for this season to add more anime to this list next year. For those of you who are new to GL (GirlsLove) it’s a genre that is less intense and sexual than who most people know as Yuri can be. Think PG instead of R, revolving around plot and romance with a lot less sex. I will include anime that can be considered “bait” because it feels like it is undeniably the truth.

Bloom into you

Although this anime is short, it’s story is intriguing. With one character who is discovering what love is and the other that is head over heels in love. Together they build a relationship with discussion around boundaries, wants and needs. Although they make mistakes and learn the value of communication it showcases the youth of a generation. (Honestly though, it feels as though one of the main characters was changed to a woman after the story was written. So one of them feels very masculine. This may have been a way to bridge romance genres to say all sexes and genders can have the same feelings. Which I certainly appreciate.)

Shiroi Suna no Aquatope (The Aquatope at White Sands)

So this one is actually pretty simple of a plot. A ex-idol runs from her fame to a southern part of Japan and finds herself enamored with a small hometown aquarium. She begs to work there and the owners house her. She meets the grand daughter of the owners who’s around her age with a dream to save the aquarium. The two girls begin a beautiful friendship as they work together in the wonders of the water with the spirit of the land.

Lycoris Recoil

Um. I really like this series. But it’s a lot like another series (in a different genre, language, and sexes) that we love an support here at YCK. Anyways, the quick summary is, two girls from the same assassin school end up working together when one leave by choice and one is expelled to work for a “for hire” team who’s front is a cafe.

Kageki Shoujo

I’ll start with saying this series currently doesn’t have a second season but it’s so near and dear to me I had to mention it. It’s about the very competitive stage performance industry in Japan that is highly popular. All the roles in these stage plays are played by incredibly skilled female performers. Our main character naturally has princely talent because she learned her acting from men while the supporting character is a drop dead gorgeous experienced actress with a whole lot of trauma.

The executioner and her way of life

As my last submission, I want to preface that this anime really felt rushed in it’s last act (not sure why). But solidly, the relationship of the main two characters felt very much like a romantic couple. This was a strange Issekai where those who are issekai’d are hunted and killed because they often have powers they cannot control. Low and behold, the most powerful isskei’d person appears and the executioner finds herself struggling to kill her.

Well that’s it for this time! I’ll see all of you in the next post!
