Happy first official day of Niji Nights! To kick us off for this holiday, I thought I’d throw us back to a post that I do almost every year as part of this great celebration. A post that highlights something Star and I both love: webtoons. In particular, LGBTQIA+ webtoons. Because Webtoons is a great place for everyone, and especially the LGBTQIA+ community–or really any minorities. This is because webtoons are made by the people for the people–which is just a fancy way of saying, since the authors come from all over the world, they bring their own unique stories and characters from varying backgrounds. Here are some of our favorite webtoons to celebrate the month of pride.

So I’ve actually been reading Novae for a very long time. It’s definitely a story where the queer love story, while important, is second to the actual craft of the real story. One of the main characters is pretty bisexual, if not pan, as he has had relationships with girls and boys before–and his current love interest while presenting male is kind of a supernatural being so I’m not sure how gender works for them. Anyway, this is a really good story if you want a queer relationship amidst a fantasy/horror setting. This is honestly such a captivating universe and the artwork is absolutely gorgeous.

A real two-in-one here. To the Stars and Back is a story I just picked up in the past few months. This is a boys love story that features POC as the main characters. Not only that, but we even get the representation that one of the characters used to be overweight as well. The love story in it is sweet as well and a slowburn. Our main character starts out by not liking and actively ignoring the love interest–to the point that I wasn’t even aware it was a BL when I started this webtoon. But over time, their trust and relationship grows and feelings bud. Things get a little more dramatic the more we learn about their pasts and an uncanny connection they had. I really enjoy this comic and it never fails to makes me smile.

I recently found this GL comic and I love it. Featuring what I would call another slow-burn queer story (can you tell that I’ve had a preference this past year). This comic takes place in a summer camp and definitely has some good vibes going on here. Plus the artwork is like SO cute. So, SO cute. I believe it’s a newer webtoon so I’m still waiting for it to get to the real good parts of this slow-burn love story.

Star’s notes: Where do I begin… Crescendo is male idol drama. It follows 1 band and 3 couples with camos of a 4th couple which is actually the prequel story and has its own spinoff. (Look forward to next year!) It’s spicy but in a webtoon filter way. The romances aren’t super easygoing but you must trust the creators because everything has a purpose. (The creators started together and then lost the writer due to COVID. So as a promise to finish the story the artist continues with what was already written.)

Star’s notes: Well it is exactly what it sounds like. Two men board a plane and due to some unforeseen seat changes, spilled food, and a college essay their chemistry grows.
Those are our picks for this year! One of my goals for next year is going to be to read some non-BL series and find more series that embrace the entire queer spectrum. I feel like the list this year heavily focused on BL (and has in the past) but there have been so many treasures to represent all kinds of LGBTQIA+ characters and stories too! It’s now my mission to discover them all. We’ll see you tomorrow again for day two, but until then–
Stay weebtastic
xoxo
