Niji Nights 2025: Day 4- BL Manga Recommendations

Niji Nights is back again for day number four! Two days ago, I brought you a list of GL manga recommendations and today? Today I’m going to be recommending you some BL manga instead. Now, I’m an avid reader of BL and while there are many different kinds, these are some of my personal favorites that I go back to again and again.

Doukyuusei

About two classmates who become friends and fall in love–this manga is a classic and easygoing story. What makes this so great though is that the author continued it with sequel series following our characters, and one of them called Blanc follows these two in college and is an emotional and beautiful ride. You just need to read this and its predecessors for it to hit right.

Omairi Desu Yo

So this one is about two old friends falling in love (or maybe they’ve been in love all along). This one features a main character who is actually a Buddhist priest–and one that’s known as being absolutely beautiful. He is in love with his childhood friend who comes back to town for the first time in years and his feelings bud between the two of them. It’s a really good manga that kinda touches on the fact that the main character, being a priest, shouldn’t have romantic feelings and be celibate–but finds himself having these thoughts and feelings for his friend. Still, it’s surprisingly lighthearted still.

I Hear the Sunspot

This boys love manga is so good that it’s one of the first manga I bought for my own collection. This is a drama and slow-burn romance. I like it because it features college students as the main characters and one that is disabled. One of the male leads is deaf and the other male lead becomes a notetaker for him. Through this, the two become deeply entwined–first as friends, but gradually growing closer into something more intimate. This series focuses mainly on character growth which is what really draws me to it.

Endou-kun no Kansatsu Nikki

Admittedly the shortest-running manga on this list, it also left a good impression on me. This is a straightforward manga about two high school classmates falling in love. It starts and stays pretty average in terms of drama and tropes. The main character falls in love with Endou-kun, a loner and expressionless kid who sits in front of him in class. The whole series feels fleeting and yet the romance in it is lasting. The skip between disinterest to simply noticing a mole on Endou-kun leads the main character to need to confront his growing feelings (and intrusive thoughts) as he begins getting closer with Endou-kun.

Given

One that I know I’ve mentioned time and time again, but that I believe should go on the list of classic/iconic BL series. This romance touches on a lot of drama, fall into a lot of BL tropes, but handles it’s characters and their relationships with each other with lots of care. I love the way it approaches romance from both the angle of boys who have always loved boys, to boys who need to accept they feel something for a fellow boy and the progression and complications presented in each relationship. All of this of course mixed with music and bands–it makes for a truly wonderful experience. 10/10. Would always recommend.

xoxo
