Day 6 of Weebsmas: Shoujo Anime Recommendations

Welcome back to 12 Days of Weebsmas Day 6! How has it been for you all as we make our steady march towards Weebsmas? For us, we’ve been having a great time giving you these recommendations for anime. Today for day six, we continue in our genres and tackle one of the best–one that have many classics, and one that is making a lot of comebacks this year — shoujo! Shoujo anime will never go out of style. But here are some of my favorites that we think you’ll love.

Fruits Basket

Fruits Basket anime

We simply cannot make a recommendation list of shoujo anime without mentioning Fruits Basket. This show was so popular that they made an anime back in the 2000s that didn’t finish and therefore remade it in 2019 to capture the hearts of new and old fans. Fruits Basket is the story of a girl who lives in a tent because her mom died and she didn’t want to burden her in laws. After a landslide wrecks her tent, she finds herself living with the Sohma’s – two of whom attend her school, Yuko the prince, and Kyo the new kid hothead. Tohru lives the perfect Shoujo dream as she finds the entire Sohma family is cursed by the chinese zodiac. This comedic shoujo is the epitome of the genre filled with romance, comedy, and drama galore. There is no better shoujo in my opinion than this.

Revolutionary Girl Utena

Revolutionary girl Utena

This is one of the most popular GirlsLove anime of all time. It’s about a girl who wishes to grow up and be a Prince one day. Being the 90s was such and experimental time for the industry it didn’t feel the fear of diving deeper into traumatic situations and heartwrenching drama the same way it does today. So this anime set the bar for a lot of people to be more forward and transparent about their own sexual experiences and gender expression. This anime is near and dear to my heart. I hope more people can feel inspired to be unapologetically who they are even if it goes against society’s norm. I also hope that this gives people strength to speak up for what they believe in and the trauma they endured.

Cardcaptor Sakura

Cardcaptor Sakura

A classic to get all elementary schoolers into shoujo. Cardcaptor Sakura follows a young girl, Sakura, as she goes to school while being a magical girl whose job is to collect “clow” cards. Magical cards that hold powers that manifest in reality. Once she captures them, she can use them for herself to help collect them all. Her best friend Tomoyo makes cute outfits and documents all her adventures, she has a love interest/rival in Shaoran who also wants to collect the cards, and an adorable animal companion in Kero the winged lion/cat. This really is like an adventure, shoujo featuring cute young love and heartbreak, a fun school life, and magical girl action galore!

Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon

This anime needs no introduction, one of the most popular magical girl anime of all time. It’s story is eternal and it resonates through every reincarnation of this series. Season after season, this story continues to tell the tale of an epic love and that through the power of friendship and teamwork leaders couldn’t be where they are today. It’s an empowering story told in two timelines how a storybook romance can become a modern-day journey of self-discovery and the definition of love itself.

A Sign of Affection

A Sign of Affection

As a shoujo this way of storytelling was nothing new. But in the theatrical sense I think it doesn’t an excellent job of showcasing how communication can be used to further grow a bond you have with someone. The pureness of wanting to experience a world different than your own can bring so much love and light into a relationship. And that’s this anime. One linguist asks one person with deafness to let him into her world by teaching him how to sign to her. Not to mention it’s so visually gorgeous to watch and you’ll learn a little bit of signing some universal and some Japanese.

Thanks so much for sticking around for day 6 of 12 days of Weebsmas! We hope you enjoyed our recommendations and I sincerely hope you get a chance to watch them this wintry season. Otherwise, we’ll see you tomorrow for Day seven of Weebsmas!

Xoxo
