Here we are again with another addition of Otakutober! This time around we thought it’d be fun to highlight some noteable anime that are centric around all beings haunted and ghostly! From casts of characters who are ghost themselves or others who are ghost hunters. We have horror-esk shows to straight horror.

Another

Is one of my favorite Horrors as well ghost stories. It starts with a cursed class with a legend that says to ignore one student or else more will go missing unwillingly. When one new kid moves to town and is placed in his class he finds the most interest in the girl who has been ignored. One at a time, more students start to die in horrific and surprising ways.
Angel Beats

This anime came out in the early 2000s and is technically a drama not a horror. It was part of the visual novel craze like Cannon so it’s a little weird and arthouse-y. So it takes place in limbo or the afterlife but many of the classmates are filler characters quite literally called Non-playable characters (NPCs). Anyways the students build a frontline fighting force to battle the student counsel.
Toliet Bound Hanako-kun

Is one of the cutest Candypop horrors I’ve seen. We follow a girl who in very haunted school and finds herself befriending the ghosts inside. One of these ghosts is the infamous and powerful Hanako-kun. A young boy who haunts the bathroom but having no idea how he died.
Ghost Stories

Is probably one of the funniest horrors I’ve seen in a long time (at least on the Dub side of things). The series follows a group of kids who are like ghost hunters. They resolve ghost stories in their town with a Bakeneko (demon yokai cat). Be warned, the producers allowed the voice actors of the earlier 2000s to say whatever they wanted as long as it was along the same lines of the plot and was off-the-cuff funny. Who knew giving voice actors free rein on the script would be a wild choice.
Hell Girl

This one is certainly one of the best descriptions for haunted anime. Hell Girl and her entourage are all spirits who help her with her requests. She often meets spirits along the way who chose to follow and assist. She’s creating her own little family of lost spirits giving them a new purpose. As devious as some of the plots may be, it is still a cast of ghost that do the hauntings. It’s also a good reminder that not all hauntings are malicious.
Shadows House

This one is arguably one of the most controversial to be in this list. The problem is that we don’t know if the shadows are living or dead. Same with the dolls once they are taken over. Although it is possible for the characters to die in whatever form or phase they are in, it’s still a theory on what they truly are or could be. But in the case that the shadows are in fact, ghost like beings (given they can posses the dolls) then purpose this is a case of ghost and human entities.
