Top 5 Anime Openings of Winter 2021

Hello and welcome back to Otaku Thursday! I hope you all enjoyed our Doki Doki Days last week–we certainly had fun with those posts! But now of course, we’re back to our regular programming. Meaning it is time to listen to the anime openings for Winter 2021! And let me just tell you–there are so many bangers this season and really good openings all around. So instead of naming them from 1 -5, I’m just going to be listing out my top 5 in no particular order. After all, these were all REALLY good. And it was honestly too difficult to choose a number one. So without further ado, let’s get to it!

Jujutsu Kaisen season 2

Jujutsu Kaisen…really knows how to do an opening. There is no doubt about that as the second opening for season 2 was super good. Graphics were amazing (as expected) and the song was pretty decent. I will say that despite the hype around the opening, it definitely isn’t my favorite — maybe just the song choice paired with the action, but I really like it still! I definitely prefer the first opening for overall feel but this second one just looks so damn cool.

I know–nerdy that I choose the opening from the volleyball anime. But legit, this a GOOD opening. The song is a straight up bop and I particularly like the feel of the opening animation. I don’t know why, but it gives me Hoshiai no Sora vibes in the weirdest way (the openings are nothing alike–maybe it’s just cause the shows give me the same vibe). I enjoy the more artistic shots paired with the action of the volleyball–and how when they are playing volleyball we move with the ball. This is just a really great sports/drama anime opening.

Sk8 the Infinity

This opening is just so gosh darn fun. I love the song–it’s so catchy, and the animation is really bright and colorful and FUN. I really enjoy that the beginning of the opening is shot like actual skateboarding videos–with this just kind of funky lens that looks very homegrown skater boy. I also like this one transition of a bunch of stickers/pop art logos that look a lot like decals for a skateboard. And the main characters just like, skating through the sky, leaving glowing lines in their path? It’s just so pleasing to watch. Definitely one of my favorites.

Horimiya

GOSH. Star and I both really love this opening. There’s just something beautifully artistic about it–I heard Star say it was everything she waned in an opening. It’s animated really well, just like the show itself, and the choice of shots in this are very unique–not really things you’d see in the anime but moments that’d be representative of something instead. The piece is very interesting to look at, and the song–while not a bop like some others on this list–tends to really stick with you–or at least me–as it gets stuck in my head a lot. I also really like the way they use frames, almost like panels of a manga. Or snapshots of stories (which Horimiya manga chapters are short snippets). It’s just a super good opening to be real, and definitely one of the most underrated.

Beastars season 2

I like this opening way more than I liked the first opening. It’s dark, it’s edgy–the song is amazing. I feel like this opening really captures the uniqueness of the animation and the characters really well. It’s very cool to watch, and very VERY fitting of the show. I honestly didn’t know what to expect of the season 2 opening–I was curious if it’d just be as jazzy as the first, but no–we went hardcore this time and I’m living for it. I haven’t started watching season 2 of Beastars yet, but I’ve watched this opening well over a dozen times.

Well, there you go. Those are my top 5 openings from Winter 2021–in no particular order. Honestly it was SO hard to pick a top five this season. Which on that note, this anime season has been a banger. Like, 2020–I FORGIVE YOU. Because this season has had some really good, and surprisingly good anime that are not just well-rounded but also have really good openings and endings. In fact…in the case I never write a post about anime endings for this season–just know that so far they are all really good as well. 2021 is shaping up to be a good year for anime–or so we think. I’m curious to see if this is a trend that will continue into spring or not. But until next time, these have just been my top 5 anime openings from winter 2021. What were some of yours?

Stay weebtastic!

xoxo
