This is a long-delayed, and long thought about blog. Today, finally, I’ll be counting down my top 5 anime from Summer 2019. It was a hard choice, not in what they were but simply in which order they were, but I think I’ve finally come to peace with my choices. There were also a lot of good anime that were continuing from last season, such as Carole & Tuesday and Kimetsu no Yaiba. Please don’t shoot me for including them on this list. I mostly wanted to focus on things that came out in the Summer season, so without further ado, let’s count them down (without giving any spoilers).
Honorable Mention:
Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san 2
5) Fire Force
This anime is literally the statement “Fight fire with fire”. The direction and animation were pretty dang awesome as expected, and it pleased me thoroughly. It has been just as good as I’d anticipated on the technical aspects and the story itself has been fairly interesting. The series will carry into the fall season, so I can’t wait to see how it’ll end.
4) Kanata no Astra
“Lost in Space” –is the song I always get stuck in my head with this anime. No, but really the plot on this was very good. Week to week, each episode was enjoyable and the characters were likable. While the ending seemed a little bit like an information dump, it still wrapped up the story nicely. It was certainly one of the best of the season.
3) Given
This is pretty much the most low-key anime on this list. Where it had no action scenes, it made up for it with nice animation, a good soundtrack, and a very deep and dramatic storyline. This straight-up drama was such a slow build but the more into the depths it got, the better it became. I think it has become one of my favorites for the year and I can’t wait for the movie to come out in 2020.
2) Dr. Stone
At the beginning of the season I was very iffy about whether or not I’d enjoy this. It was either going to be really cool or really…not. Luckily, this ended up being pretty cool. While it’s not the scientific power-up of anime it could’ve been, the premise and the use of science in the anime certainly makes it unique and worthy of remembrance. Again, this series will continue into fall and I’m curious to see where the plot will take it.
1)Vinland Saga
Yes. The number one anime of this season is Vinland Saga. The storytelling on Vinland is absolutely phenomenal. To be honest I thought I’d only like this for the vikings but Vinland hits all the good points of an anime. The direction is also wonderful as is the choreography for fights. The animation is pretty solid, music is good, characters likable, and again, the storytelling is some of the best I’ve seen recently. It’s thoroughly engrossing, and while it too doesn’t end until fall, I already know that it’s going to be good. If you haven’t started watching Vinland Saga, do yourself a favor and please go watch it.
So there you have it! Those are my choices for the top five anime of Summer 2019. I’m happy to say Vinland Saga will be the third in our bracket for Anime of the Year. Of course, seeing the ending of Carole & Tuesday makes me also want to nominate for best multi-seasonal anime. So we exit summer with not one, but two nominations for two different categories. We’ve now got one season to go before I buckle down and start deciding the awards for the end of the year.
What were some of your favorite anime of Summer 2019? Let me know in the comments below! Til next time.
