Welcome to another day of Hotsui Matsuri 2026! We’re back to talk about something that has popped up a few times in Anime and other media called, “Sacred Sake” or “Nihonshu”. A special kind of sake that is blessed in the shinto religion. Let’s get into it!
I guess we can start by talking about what Sake is for those who don’t know what it is exactly. I won’t go too crazy but Sake is a version of rice wine. There’s levels of filtration that’s clear to cloudy and other countries have their own version of rice wine as well.
So with that being said, what makes this Sake so sacred? Because it’s only used in ceremonial rituals like:
Naorai
In short, think of it like a formal dinner where the host schedules a meal, then removes the dishes to serve the sake while listening to traditional music for the Naorai. This kind of dinner is an old practice to brings the participants closer to the gods sealing the bond between people and the divine.
San-san-kudo
For a traditional Japanese wedding, the bride and groom sip from three cups each to symbolize the formal union with the couple and their families.
Kagami-biraki
Is the ceremonial opening of the sake used for New Years. The opener uses a mallet to represent a mirror into the realm of spirits and allows good fortune to enter.
Omiki
Is the most scared of sake that is high quality sake that is offered to the gods for good harvest, health and protection of their home, land or village.
Kuchikamizake
Is the practice of shrine maidens or villagers chewing rice into a collective bottle to ferment on it’s own using natural enyzmes and wild yeast.
