Welcome back to Otaku Thursday! I know last week we went on a bit of a break so that Star and I could make our way to Sakuracon. While no, I don’t have pictures for you just yet, I DO have my most anticipated post of any given season. What is that you ask? Our pick for top five anime of winter 2023. Now, let me just start off by saying that in our opinion–this season was very subpar. There were only a few gems in there, and while we probably missed a few of them, it seems the overall season was a letdown. Many shows, while good, weren’t great. Many required part twos or if they did finish they had subpar plots. With that in mind, here are our choices for the top five anime of winter 2023.

5 ) Tokyo Revengers: Christmas Showdown Arc
Coming in hot at number five is our number one hot mess of a character leading a show. Takemichi is a complete fuck up through and through, and while his return for season two of Tokyo Revengers wasn’t the best, it did have some great moments. More importantly, we’re loving the Mikey content we got towards the end of the season and we think that this arc could’ve been done better, we look forward to the next season.

4 ) Tensei Oujo to Tensai Reijou no Mahou Kakumei
Number four is this anime with an overly convoluted title. So, in terms of this show–we found the plot subpar. It wasn’t always gripping or really good, but it was decent. It could’ve been paced A LOT better, but overall it was solid. I liked the bits with the MC’s brother, but there were a lot of plot points we needed more exploration on. However, the best part of this anime was that IT DIDN’T BAIT US. Our two homegirls actually had an onscreen kiss and ended up together. So happy.

This anime is really pretty–Challe is extremely pretty. I found homegirl was a little ditzy at first but grew on me. Other characters were also pretty likable (except Jonas–fuck that guy–no redemption for him thank you very much). Star says that it was the romance that people were waiting for–sometimes it’s a demon, sometimes a devil, and this time–a good-looking fairy. While the ending was a little upsetting, there is a part two on the horizon. I personally liked how homegirl didn’t rely on Challe the whole time for fixing her problems. It was nice to see her try to take agency on her own a little.

2 )The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague
The romantic anthology of the year. Or at least, that’s what I believe. Ice Guy is a delightful show that is filled with sweetness and –BEHOLD–adult characters. I love a good shoujo that focuses on adults these days as Star and I, while finding high school romances cute, can relate better to the adults now. This workplace rom-com was so entertaining and a bright spot among the anime. I loved the touch of fantasy, the cute moments between homeboy and his crush. It was all very heartwarming. I think this is something I will watch again in the future when I need something to warm my cold heart.
1 ) Buddy Daddies

Undoubtedly number one is Buddy Daddies. This was pretty much the only anime that impressed us greatly this season. There were so many good things about it–from the cuteness of Rei and Kauzki’s relationship with Miri to her antics of telling everyone her papas used guns. We had funny moments, action moments, and even heartbreakingly serious moments. I liked that it revolved heavily around family–and ways that Kazuki and Rei had lost family only to rebuild it with Miri. The ways that we watch how Miri improved their lives, and how they so desperately wanted to give her a proper life–was precious. They truly healed each other. Like 10/10 this is an extremely solid first nomination for anime of the year.
That is it. Those are our choices. Tell me, did we miss a gem of an anime? We were really struggling to fill spots 2-5 on our list this season since nothing really popped out aside from Buddy Daddies. Let us know! Otherwise, I’m wrapping up this post so we can look forward to next season.
Stay weebtastic,
xoxo

I am very behind on new anime, so this list is nice to have!! I definitely want to check out Buddy Daddies at some point. There’s just so much to watch, especially with new shows coming out all the time.
