Alright, this one goes out to all you kids that are muddling through school as a weeb. Or for those of you that want to remise about the cringy times, here it is. Being a weeb use to be the most terrifying thing at school, mostly because it’s not the norm. I didn’t have an older sibling growing up to warn me… that what I was wearing could be how my classmates would remember me for the rest of my life so…
Being that I am not a teenager, it’s hard for me to put my mind into the youngins of today. But I imagine these things are fundamentally the same from.
Clubs and Extracurriculars
Anime club is like having a big neon sign that reads, “Weebs here!”. It’s a great place to meet other weebs but keep in mind it is all levels of weebs. The cool and collected otakus, the fanfiction writers, and the fresh weeboos that just discovered anime for the first time. This is both a great and terrifying place to be. Although clubs are meant to be inviting they can also be clique-ish as well, and for the most part animes clubs came into being because someone was all alone to begin with and needed a physical outlet to express just how intense the last manga chapter of My Hero Academia was. But you can always try a martial arts club like Aikido or Kendo.
Friend Groups
Going into a new school with people you don’t know can be daunting. Which is why clubs are helpful for making new friends. But sometimes that’s not the way we want to go, especially when you want to start fresh. Friend groups that are old may know about the secret Otaku obsession that you may have but for those of you who don’t, I completely understand. Finding friends who understand the kind of person you are becoming is important to your own personal growth. Sometimes is a place like, japanese class, or art that helps expose some of those closeted weebs. Once you’ve met enough of try hosting a gettogether at an event you might all enjoy. Try a miyazaki marathon or movie theater debut and form your group.
Studying Materials
There are definite tells you can look for in other people that give away just how weeby everyone can be. Like stickers, pins, bento boxes, swag can all be signs to look for in a classroom. As much as closet weebs want to hide their fandoms they have a little bit of their obsession somewhere. It’s hard to leave your husbando behind.
Pack a Bento
Sometimes you don’t have time to pack lunch in the morning. But if you have an used bento box and some time the night before why don’t you pack yourself a good full bento. Bentos are so unique that no matter where you are sitting, see one can always bring up a conversation. You can talk technique and maybe even plan a shopping trip on the latest and greatest tools to use.
I think that’s enough to get you started. Keep in mind kids can be really mean but if you don’t take that first step you may be missing out on meeting someone great.
