After all these years, we had never thought to do a post on Magical girls. What better a time then Otakutober to talk about the magical girl phenomenon. From witches to warriors let’s look at the evolution of Magical Girl Anime.

The concepts isn’t that far fetched when you think about it. Because it’s widely used due to the popularity of magic in media it wasn’t a stretch to start with a basic western witch and end with a school girl design. Either way there was always a colorful outfit. The duality of having one life that is whimsical and one that is ordinary feels like the perfect combination for relatable storytelling and popular media. It very quickly became a source of perseverance and bravery for the kiddos and thus an instant success.

So typically the magical girls we see are feminine in nature but recently we’ve seen a resurgence in untraditional magical girls who push gender norms. Usually they have more mature plots like Madoka Magic, Burn witch or Wonder Egg Priority. And soon the remake of Magical Knights Rayearth (my personal favorite). One thing that all magical girl anime have is crazy pretty transformation sequences.

So, I think I’ve decided on that in the world of anime what contributes as a magical girl anime are these 3 things:
1. Colorful outfits
2. Something that instills Perseverance and Bravery.
3. Pretty transformations
