Day 5 of Niji Nights: Queer creators in the anime industry

It’s another day of Niji Nights 2025! I’ll start off with the complexity around writing a post like this one. Many of you may not be as aware of the homophobic nature that Japan has but queerness and openness surrounding sexuality is still closeted when it comes to professionalism and some creators. Many of their backgrounds are hidden from the public, for safety and privacy. So this blog may feel vague but it’s on purpose,  instead of individuals this blog will showcase studios and distribution companies that support Queer creators and their works.

Blue Lynx

This one is the first to come to mind since it’s been a pretty consistent supporter of some of the most moving storylines starring Queer & LGBTQUIA2S+ characters in the BL world.

Some of their most famous works is:

This Boyslove was huge for it’s time in manga then 20 years later in anime form. It’s a romance that crosses racial boundaries.

When passion for the arts becomes romantic it causes so much growth for the characters in this anime.

Seven Seas

This is one of the first translation of Chinese web novel companies to actually publish Boyslove stories in different languages for physical copies.

Stories I literally go broke reading:

Two rivals become friends and things keep evolving in this moving story.

Two gods with bad reputations find solace and comfort in each other.

Dogo Kobo

It was so subtle but I realized some of my favorite Girlslove and Queer anime has come from this studio! Not to mention their art styles are so pretty.

One ex-idol and one anonymous artist find themselves getting more inspired by each other’s works.

This pairing transcends gender norms and this couple flourishes truly being each other’s other half.

I’ll stop for now! But there are more hidden gems and studios that continue to make beautiful stories into full productions.
