Hey it’s Star and like I’ve explained in the workplace post, this is about family occasions.

For the longest time, it wasn’t “cool” to be a weeb. But there is a way to be a functional weeb. With that being said the key is that there is a time and a place for everything.

Read the room and if you know you feel you can’t handle the pressure of your relatives don’t force yourself to do anything you don’t want to do.

There are three situations that can lead to this circumstance.

1. If you were a weeb as a youngin’, your family probably already suspected something. Being that they might have not fully understood the entirety of your fandom addictions, especially if you’re still into it now.
2. If you’ve just become a weeb in the comfort of your own home thanks to streaming services, you probably haven’t shared this info with family. So they and possibly other people have no idea that you’re into Japanese culture.
3. You’ve discovered it at the family gathering and you’re just now taking all this in.

How to break it down to your family

If you’ve got a big family it’s more than possible that you aren’t the only weeb in this place.

Japanese culture is more popular than you think and anime has definitely widened it’s horizons. Use this opportunity to educate BUT NOT TOO MUCH. Answer the question for the sake of the conversation and move on.

When there is a silence use that as a moment to walk away. Take a breather get some refreshments. Or use it to ask other people about what they are interested in.

Don’t be rude, conceited, or self-absorbent. You want to be inviting not defensive.

If you wish to keep it a secret than by all means do you. But don’t ever rule out the possibility of that secret staying a secret.

Don’t fret! If you are outed too soon, take ownership of your passion and let your freak flag fly!

Some people, may never understand your love for dating sim games and pokemon but showing your love and appreciation for your hobby is something to be treasured. There’s a ton of people out there that don’t understand what it means to be passionate about something. So in a way, you have unlocked one of the most valuable skills to have as a human being.
